Ringfort (Rath), Ballybeg, Co. Cork

A low grass-covered bank rising from a tillage field is easy to overlook, but the slightly raised ground at Ballybeg in north Cork has been holding its shape for well over a thousand years.

The enclosure measures roughly 23 metres east to west and just over 19 metres north to south, making it a modest example of a rath, the Irish term for an earthen ringfort. These were the farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, typically dating from around the fifth to the twelfth century, built by a single family who lived within the enclosed area and used the surrounding bank and ditch for both security and social display.

What makes this particular rath quietly revealing is the paper trail left by the Ordnance Survey. The enclosure appears on the six-inch maps of 1842, 1905, and 1937, each time drawn with the hachured markings that cartographers used to indicate a circular earthwork. That consistency across nearly a century of mapping suggests the site was recognisable and intact enough to record each time a surveyor came through. The interior is saucer-shaped, sloping down toward the north-east, and the earthen bank survives from the south-west around to the north and from the east to the south-east, with a scarp replacing the bank along the northern to eastern arc. One element that complicates the picture is a field boundary running east to west, which appears to cut across the southern side of the enclosure. Whether that boundary is centuries old or a more recent agricultural imposition, it has effectively clipped the rath's southern edge, leaving the monument slightly truncated within the working landscape around it.
