Ringfort (Rath), Ballyglavin, Co. Cork

Beneath the gorse that smothers its banks, this hillcrest enclosure in Ballyglavin holds something that does not show itself at the surface: according to the landowner, there is a tunnel running beneath the fort.

No trace of it can be seen from above, which is precisely what makes it interesting. Features like this are sometimes souterrains, underground stone-lined passages associated with early medieval ringforts that were used for storage, refuge, or perhaps ventilation of perishables. Whether that is what lies here remains unconfirmed, but the possibility quietly complicates what might otherwise read as a fairly ordinary agricultural enclosure.

The fort itself is a rath, the most common type of ringfort found across Ireland, typically constructed during the early medieval period as a defended farmstead for a single family or small community. This one sits on the crest of a hill above a north-west facing slope, positioned to take in views across the surrounding landscape in every direction. A siting like that was rarely accidental. The enclosure measures roughly 37 metres north to south and just over 40 metres east to west, and is defined by two concentric earthen banks, an inner one standing to about 0.45 metres and an outer one to 0.6 metres, separated by a fosse, a shallow ditch, running from east to north. Both banks are considerably eroded and largely overgrown with gorse, though the interior remains clear and slopes gently westward. A causeway to the south marks the original entrance gap, and there is a second gap in the inner bank to the east.

The interior offers a reasonable sense of scale once you are inside, and the elevation makes the defensive logic of the original placement legible, even if the earthworks themselves are much reduced from whatever height they once reached. The gorse coverage means the banks are easier to trace from a slight distance than up close.
