Ringfort (Rath), Ballynahaha, Co. Limerick

There is something quietly melancholy about a monument that survives only as a faint swell in a field.

At a site in the townland of Ballynahaha in County Limerick, a ringfort, once a substantial circular earthwork, has been levelled almost entirely into the surrounding pasture. What remains is barely a presence at all: a very slight rise in the ground, roughly circular, that most walkers would cross without a second thought.

A ringfort, sometimes called a rath, is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches encircling a raised central area. They were domestic in origin, built to shelter a farming family and their livestock, and they are among the most common monument types in the Irish countryside, with tens of thousands recorded across the island. The Ballynahaha example was recorded on the 1924 Ordnance Survey six-inch map as an embanked circular enclosure with a diameter of approximately fifty metres, which would have made it a fairly typical example of the type. The site sits on a north-facing slope, presently under pasture. By the time Denis Power compiled the record, uploaded in August 2011, the earthworks had been levelled, leaving almost nothing visible above ground.

The site offers little to the casual eye, which is in some ways the point. Visiting means standing on a north-facing slope in a field and looking carefully at the ground itself, trying to locate the very gentle circular rise that is all the monument now offers. The 1924 OS map is the most useful guide to what was once there, and consulting it beforehand gives a sharper sense of what has been lost. Access would require landowner permission, as the site sits in working farmland. There are no markers, no signage, and no infrastructure of any kind; the site exists now primarily as a cartographic memory and a faint irregularity in the grass.
