Ringfort (Rath), Ballyshoneen, Co. Cork

By the time the Ordnance Survey cartographers returned to Ballyshoneen in the early twentieth century, roughly half of what they had carefully mapped sixty years earlier was already gone.

Their 1842 six-inch map shows a neat circular enclosure about fifty-five metres across, the kind of hachured ring that recurs thousands of times across the Irish landscape, each one marking the site of a rath, an earthen ringfort of early medieval date. A rath typically consisted of one or more raised earthen banks enclosing a farmstead, offering a degree of status and security to the family within. By the 1904 survey, the south-eastern half of this one had been levelled, and the 1937 map confirmed that the loss was permanent.

What remains today is a curving arc of earthen bank along the north-western and northern edges of the enclosure, sitting in pasture a short distance north-east of the Owennagearagh River in mid Cork. The bank is modest but legible, standing about 0.6 metres above the interior ground level and roughly 1.3 metres above the exterior, the difference in height a reminder that the bank was both a physical barrier and a visible statement of enclosure. Across the interior and the surrounding field, the faint corrugations of old cultivation ridges are still visible in the right light and season, the ground carrying the memory of agricultural work that postdates the ringfort itself and may well have contributed to its partial destruction. Field boundaries to the west and north follow the line of the original enclosure, a common pattern in the Irish countryside where later land management quietly absorbed the geometry of earlier monuments.
