This circular earthwork measures approximately 30 metres across its interior and sits on what appears to be an artificially levelled platform; a testament to the engineering capabilities of its early medieval builders. The site commands excellent views across the surrounding landscape, a strategic advantage that would have been crucial for spotting approaching visitors, whether friend or foe.

Today, only subtle traces of the earthen bank that once enclosed this settlement survive. The defensive ditch, or fosse, that typically accompanied such structures and was noted by earlier antiquarians like Davies, has since vanished from view, likely filled in by centuries of agricultural activity and natural erosion. Despite its weathered state, the ringfort represents a tangible link to Ireland’s early medieval period, when these fortified farmsteads dotted the countryside and served as homes for prosperous farming families.

The site was documented as part of the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. This survey catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, providing invaluable records of sites like this Carricknahorna ringfort that might otherwise be overlooked or forgotten. Such earthworks are remarkably common across Ireland, with an estimated 45,000 examples identified nationwide, though many, like this one, survive only as gentle undulations in the landscape.
