Ringfort (Rath), Carrowkeel, Co. Clare

A small hillock rising out of marshy pasture in County Clare has been occupied, in one sense or another, for well over a thousand years.

The ringfort that crowns it, known as Liscooleen, sits at the summit with clear views stretching in all directions, which was almost certainly the point. Raths, as these earthwork enclosures are called, were typically built during the early medieval period as defended farmsteads, the bank and surrounding ditch, or fosse, marking off a family's living space from the wider landscape. The fact that this one was placed on the highest available ground, even a modest hillock, suggests that visibility and a degree of command over the surrounding terrain mattered to whoever chose the spot.

The structure itself measures roughly 29 metres north to south and just over 26 metres east to west. Its defining features are a bank still standing between one and two and a half metres in height externally, a fosse about a metre wide, and a secondary outer bank on the south-south-east side. Along the western to north-eastern arc, a berm, a flat shelf of ground between two earthworks, runs about three and a half metres wide with stones visible along its outer edge. The inner bank is noticeably lower on the south-east side, and the outer bank in that same area may have formed part of an original entrance. There is also evidence of quarrying into the bank at the south-west, a reminder that old earthworks were often treated as convenient sources of building material in later centuries. The interior is flat and now thickly covered in rushes, the marshy ground having long since reasserted itself. Ordnance Survey mapmakers recorded the site on both the 1840 and 1916 editions of the six-inch maps, with the 1916 edition carrying the name Liscooleen, preserving at least a fragment of whatever local identity the place once held.
