Known locally as ‘Gorey Fort’, the site overlooks marshland to the north and west, with cultivated fields stretching away to the south and east. The defensive position wasn’t chosen by accident; whoever built this fortification understood the strategic value of high ground with naturally protected flanks.

The ringfort itself follows a classic Irish defensive design, though nature has certainly lent a hand. The main enclosure sits on a roughly circular natural platform, measuring between 13 and 16.5 metres in internal diameter. This central area is protected by a low earthen bank, beyond which lies a deep fosse, or defensive ditch, with an outer bank completing the triple line of defence. The builders cleverly incorporated the landscape into their fortifications; outside the outer bank, the ground drops away sharply, creating an additional natural barrier that would have made any assault from that direction particularly challenging.

Archaeological surveys indicate the fort’s entrance was positioned on the eastern side, where remnants of a causeway cross the fosse and gaps in both banks mark what would have been the main gateway. Like many Irish ringforts, this site likely served as a defended homestead during the early medieval period, though without excavation it’s difficult to determine exactly when it was occupied or by whom. The fortification stands as one of thousands of similar sites scattered across Ireland, each telling a story of communities who needed to protect themselves, their families, and their livestock in an often uncertain world.
