It is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, which was a type of enclosed homestead built in earthen or stone form across Ireland roughly between the third and tenth centuries. Thousands survive across the country, but this one has particular physical presence: the internal bank rises to nearly three metres, and the external fosse, a defensive ditch dug around the perimeter, drops almost two metres deep. Those are substantial dimensions, suggesting this was not a modest or incidental construction.

The fort sits on the south side of the Awbeg River, near the top of a north-west-facing slope, a position that would have offered both drainage and a degree of natural surveillance over the surrounding ground. The enclosure is roughly circular, measuring 35 metres north to south and 31 metres east to west, with a causewayed entrance to the north-west. A causewayed entrance is essentially a raised crossing left uncut across the fosse, forming a narrow approach, here just 0.6 metres wide, that would have controlled movement in and out of the enclosure. In the south-west quadrant there is a depression measuring roughly 3.6 metres by 2.7 metres and dropping 1.5 metres; this is tentatively attributed to an uprooted tree rather than any deliberate feature, a reminder of how much woodland activity quietly reshapes ancient earthworks over centuries. The site lies within the demesne of Creagh Castle, placing it within a landscape that has accumulated layers of use across very different periods of Irish history.
