Ringfort (Rath), Cullenagh (Glenquin By.), Co. Limerick

Some archaeological sites earn their interest not from what survives but from what does not.

In a stretch of level pasture in Cullenagh, in the old barony of Glenquin in County Limerick, there is a ringfort that no longer exists. No earthwork, no bank, no ditch; only the ordinary surface of a field where, according to the cartographic record, something once stood.

A ringfort, or rath, is one of the most common monument types in the Irish landscape, a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, most often associated with early medieval farming settlements. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation. This one, recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1924 as a circular enclosure with a diameter of approximately thirty metres, had already been levelled by the time Denis Power compiled the site record, uploaded in August 2011. When the site was inspected, no trace of the monument was evident. The 1924 map depiction is, in effect, all that now documents its existence.

There is little practical guidance to offer a visitor here, which is itself part of what makes the record worth pausing over. The field in Cullenagh holds no visible feature to locate, photograph, or stand beside. What it offers instead is a reminder of how routinely these monuments were removed, through agricultural improvement, land clearance, or the simple pressure of working land over generations. The OS six-inch series, surveyed and revised across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, captured many such sites before they disappeared entirely, making maps of that period an inadvertent archive of erasure. If you consult the 1924 sheet for this part of Limerick, the small circular symbol is still there, quietly marking something the ground itself no longer remembers.
