Ringfort (Rath), Curry, Co. Mayo

On a low knoll in the pastureland of Curry, County Mayo, a ringfort sits quietly in a field, its double earthen banks still readable in the landscape despite centuries of gradual erosion and at least some deliberate quarrying.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically enclosing a farmstead within one or more circular earthen banks. What makes this example worth pausing over is its bivariate construction: two concentric banks separated by a fosse, the term for the ditch dug between them, giving the enclosure an added layer of definition that hints at a household of some local standing.

The site measures roughly 39 metres north to south and 37 metres east to west, making it a fairly substantial example of the type. The inner bank still stands to a height of 1.6 metres, and the outer to around 1.2 metres, with the intervening fosse dropping to a depth of approximately 0.8 metres. These earthworks survive best along the north-east to east arc and from the south-east round to the west, though the interior and the northern bank have suffered from quarrying at some point in the past, likely for stone or useful fill. A possible entrance gap on the eastern side, around 2.9 metres wide, aligns with a common convention in Irish ringfort construction, where eastward-facing entrances were favoured. Marshy ground to the west of the knoll may well have influenced the original choice of this slightly elevated position, offering a degree of natural drainage and visibility that flatter ground nearby could not provide. The site was recorded in a 1994 archaeological survey of the Ballinrobe district compiled by D. Lavelle, covering the wider area around Lough Mask and Lough Carra.
