Ringfort (Rath), Dromalta, Co. Limerick

In a damp corner of County Limerick, a subtly raised patch of ground in an unremarkable field is all that remains of what was once a defended farmstead, its edges so worn by time and drainage works that most walkers would pass it without a second glance.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common monument type in the Irish landscape. Thousands were built during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and each one typically enclosed the home of a farming family of some local standing, surrounded by an earthen bank and ditch to deter cattle raiders and signal status as much as to provide serious fortification.

The Dromalta example sits in poorly drained, gently undulating pasture, with decent views opening out to the east, south, and west, which would have been a practical consideration for anyone keeping watch over livestock or approaching visitors. The monument is roughly circular, measuring approximately 23.4 metres north to south and 21.1 metres east to west. What survives of the defining feature is a scarped edge, essentially a cut or shaped slope in the ground, running from the west-northwest to the west-southwest, around three metres wide and less than half a metre high. There are also faint traces of an external fosse, a defensive ditch, in the northwest, though it is shallow, only about 0.2 metres deep, and narrow. The site was recorded and compiled by Denis Power, with details uploaded in July 2013.

The interior of the enclosure is noticeably uneven underfoot and slopes gently down toward the southwest, which, combined with the poorly drained ground, makes the going soft in wet weather. A drain running along the western edge has clipped the site, truncating part of the original circuit. There is no formal access or interpretive signage, and the scarp is described as poorly defined, so arriving with an Ordnance Survey map and some patience will serve a visitor better than any expectation of dramatic earthworks. The views that made this spot worth choosing in the early medieval period are still there, at least.
