Known locally as Dunmurney, the site occupies a dramatic position where the land drops away to form a cliff edge on its northern side. The earthen platform at its heart measures 21.4 metres north to south and 23.1 metres east to west, rising up to 1.2 metres above the surrounding ground.

The fort’s defensive features remain clearly visible despite centuries of weathering. An earthen bank encircles the platform on three sides, maintaining a distance of six to ten metres from the central area. On the northwest and northeast corners, this bank extends all the way to the cliff edge, making clever use of the natural topography for protection. The bank itself varies considerably in its dimensions; in some places it stands just 20 centimetres high, whilst elsewhere it reaches 40 centimetres, with widths ranging from 2.3 to 4.7 metres.

Archaeological surveys have identified possible evidence of a fosse, or defensive ditch, on the southern side of the site, running outside the protective bank. This would have provided an additional layer of defence for the settlement’s most vulnerable approach. Today, the ringfort sits amidst undulating terrain used for pasture, its earthworks still clearly defined against the landscape. The site forms part of County Donegal’s rich archaeological heritage, documented in the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, which catalogues field antiquities from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century.
