In a flat stretch of pasture in north Cork, a roughly circular platform of earth sits quietly in a field, easy to miss if you do not know what you are looking for.
This is a rath, the most common type of early medieval settlement in Ireland, essentially a raised enclosed area defined by a surrounding earthen bank, within which a farmstead and its associated buildings once stood. What makes this particular example worth pausing over is the evidence of several different periods of use compressed into a modest footprint: a bank, an entrance, and faint ridges in the soil that speak to centuries of human activity.
