Ringfort (Rath), Lisduff, Co. Mayo

Between four and five thousand ringforts are recorded across Ireland, yet individually most of them go almost entirely unremarked.

The one at Lisduff in County Mayo is a case in point. Known in Irish archaeology as a rath, a ringfort is typically a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, built during the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, and used as a farmstead or the defended residence of a local farming family. They are rural, domestic, and numerous enough that they fade into the landscape, which is precisely what makes each surviving example quietly significant.

The place name itself carries some weight. Lisduff derives from the Irish Lios Dubh, meaning the dark or black enclosure, where lios is simply the Irish word for a ringfort. It is not uncommon for Irish townland names to preserve a direct reference to a now-obscured earthwork, and in that sense the name functions as its own small piece of evidence, suggesting the feature was prominent enough in the local landscape to define the place long before any formal survey was made. Mayo as a county retains a considerable density of such monuments, its relatively low levels of intensive tillage having allowed earthworks to survive that were ploughed out elsewhere.

Beyond its existence as a recorded monument in the county, specific details about the Lisduff rath, its dimensions, condition, number of banks, or any finds associated with it, are not currently available through published sources. What can be said is that ringforts of this type, wherever they are encountered in the west of Ireland, tend to occupy slight rises in otherwise undulating ground, and many remain visible as low grassed-over banks only distinguishable from their surroundings if you know what you are looking for.
