Ringfort (Rath), Morenane, Co. Limerick

There is something quietly unsettling about a monument that exists primarily as an absence.

At Morenane in County Limerick, a ringfort, the type of circular earthwork enclosure built in early medieval Ireland as a farmstead or defended homestead, once occupied a north-facing slope in what is now open pasture. It no longer survives in any meaningful form. What remains, if anything, is a slight rise in the ground, the kind of irregularity you might walk across without a second thought.

The site was still visible enough to be recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1924, where it appears as an embanked circular enclosure with a diameter of roughly thirty metres. That is a reasonably modest example of its type; many raths were considerably larger, and some were accompanied by multiple banks and ditches. By the time Denis Power compiled the record, uploaded to the survey in August 2011, local information suggested the monument had been levelled around 1975, when field boundaries in the surrounding area were also removed. That kind of agricultural reorganisation was common across Ireland during the latter half of the twentieth century, and it claimed a significant number of earthworks that had survived for more than a thousand years simply through the inertia of field patterns built around them.

For anyone drawn to sites of this kind, Morenane is less a destination than a case study in what a landscape can quietly lose. The enclosure itself is gone, and even the slight rise that might be a remnant of the original bank is easy to overlook in pasture. There are no markers, no excavation records mentioned in the notes, and no surviving structural detail to examine. What the site offers, in a rather austere way, is a reminder that the archaeological record is not fixed; it continues to shrink. If you are in the area and want to locate it, you are working from a north-facing field slope and a map reference, with the 1924 OS sheet as the clearest evidence that anything was ever there at all.
