The site is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, which was the standard form of rural settlement across Ireland roughly from the fifth to the twelfth century. Thousands survive in various states of preservation, but this one at Streamsford is on the more eroded end of the spectrum, its circular enclosure reduced over the centuries to a low scarp and a partial fosse, the latter being the external ditch that would once have run all the way around the perimeter. Today that fosse survives only from the eastern arc, curving south and around to the south-west, leaving the northern and western sides effectively invisible at ground level.

The rath itself is oval in plan, measuring roughly 29 metres on its north-east to south-west axis and 25 metres across. Those dimensions suggest a modest but not unusual enclosure, the kind that would have sheltered a single family and their livestock behind a combination of earthen bank, ditch, and probably a timber palisade or hedge. What makes this site quietly interesting is a shallow linear depression in the eastern half of the interior, about 13.8 metres long and 1.5 metres wide, running roughly north-north-east to south-south-west. This is considered a possible souterrain, an underground passage or stone-lined tunnel built beneath or beside a ringfort, typically used for storage, refuge, or both. Souterrains are relatively common in ringfort archaeology across Ireland, though many remain unexcavated and their precise function at any given site is rarely established without investigation.
