On the eastern edge of high ground overlooking Mulroy Bay in County Donegal, the ruins of Mevagh Church stand as a testament to centuries of religious significance.

First documented in 1622 as ‘the ancient parish church now ruinated’, this medieval structure retains enough of its rubble and pinning construction to reveal its original 13.15 by 5.5 metre interior dimensions. The surviving walls, particularly the eastern gable with its deeply splayed window openings, showcase the characteristic building techniques of medieval Irish churches. Fire damage has left its mark on the inner face of the south wall, whilst collapsed masonry and graveyard debris now litter the interior of what was once a focal point of local worship.

The church sits within a modern graveyard that harbours several intriguing early features, each adding layers to the site’s archaeological richness. A 2.5 metre tall cross carved from a single stone slab stands south of the church, its shaft and arms meeting at hollowed angles emphasised by small knob projections. Nearby, a standing stone rises 75 centimetres from the ground; this modest monolith once supported the small ‘wishing stone of Mevagh’, now sadly missing but recorded in the Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland in 1902. Perhaps most remarkable is an irregularly shaped stone near the church’s southwest corner, its upper surface decorated with twenty three cup marks, each roughly six centimetres in diameter and carved 1.5 centimetres deep into the rock.

At Cluain Tsalach, another ritual site in Donegal, a holy stone continues the county’s tradition of sacred markers. These sites, scattered across the landscape, remind us that religious practice in Ireland has taken many forms over the millennia, from prehistoric cup marked stones to medieval churches, each generation leaving its mark on places deemed spiritually significant. The Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983, meticulously documented these remains, ensuring that even as the stones crumble, their stories endure for future generations to discover and interpret.
