Ritual site – holy well, Carrowmullin, Co. Donegal

In the townland of Carrowmullin near Fahan, County Donegal, St. Mura's Holy Well has drawn pilgrims for centuries, particularly on 12th March when devotees perform the traditional turus, or pilgrimage circuit, to honour the feast day of St. Mura who died in 645 AD.

The well sits close to what was once the Lough Swilly Railway line, near the former St. John’s residence, with the pilgrimage station located in an adjacent field. Though the renowned antiquarian Colgan once documented miracles associated with the site, these records have sadly been lost to time, leaving only oral traditions to speak of the well’s sacred reputation.

The survival of this ancient holy well owes much to the intervention of some unlikely protectors in the railway age. When engineers were plotting the Lough Swilly Railway’s route, a local landowner who, despite not sharing the Catholic faith of the pilgrims, recognised the cultural importance of the site and successfully persuaded them to adjust the line’s curvature to preserve the well. This gentleman, along with Major Marshall, J.P., the former owner of St. John’s, and the parish priest Father Bernard M’Eldowney, ensured the well’s protection from industrial progress. Major Marshall even commissioned an ornate brick arch to shelter the well, though this was later destroyed by vandals; its fallen remains still lie scattered about as testament to what the antiquarian Colgan called the “rabidness of their fury.”

Today, visitors can still find this resilient holy well, which continues to attract those seeking connection with Ireland’s early Christian heritage. While St. Mura’s crozier now resides in the National Museum in Dublin and his bell in London’s Wallace Collection, the well remains in its original location, a tangible link to the saint’s legacy and the enduring tradition of pilgrimage in Inishowen.
