Ritual site – holy well, Knocknafaugher, Co. Donegal

Tucked away in the wetlands near Columbkille's Lough, between Creeslough and Dunfanaghy in County Donegal, lies St. Columbkille's Well, a modest yet significant holy site.

The well itself is covered by a simple stone slab topped with a small heap of loose stones, sitting about 20 metres from the lough’s edge. This unassuming spot forms part of an ancient pilgrimage route, with a penitential station located roughly 40 metres to the south, where devotees would have performed religious rituals as part of their spiritual journey.

The well remains an active site of devotion, though on a much smaller scale than in centuries past. Each year on 9th June, a handful of pilgrims still “walk the turus”, the traditional pattern of prayer and movement around the sacred site. Evidence of the well’s former popularity can be found on the nearby hill, Cnoc a’ Chullin, where a substantial cairn of small stones has accumulated over generations; each stone placed by a pilgrim who completed their devotions. Local folklore adds an intriguing dimension to the site, with tales that St. Columbkille himself cursed the adjacent lough with a “left-handed blessing” after a fisherman denied having any catch. According to tradition, this curse explains why no fish can be found in these waters, a story that parallels similar legends about Mulroy Bay.

The site was documented by the folklorist Ó Muirgheasa in 1936 and later included in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled in 1983. Though the physical remains are modest, the well represents centuries of continuous religious practice and folk tradition, making it a fascinating example of how pre-Christian sacred sites were absorbed into Christian pilgrimage traditions throughout Ireland.
