Road – road/trackway, Ballycally, Co. Clare

In the townland of Ballycally in County Clare, a stretch of old road or trackway has been formally recorded as an archaeological monument, which places it in the company of ringforts, standing stones, and ancient field systems.

That a road should earn this designation is less surprising than it might seem. Ireland retains traces of remarkably early routeways, some dating back to the early medieval period or beyond, and even a modest track worn into the landscape over centuries can carry genuine archaeological significance. The classification of this feature as a monument suggests it preserves something more than the memory of recent farm traffic.

Roads and trackways recorded in archaeological surveys often fall into a few broad categories: hollow ways, where repeated use has worn the route visibly below the surrounding ground surface; toghers, which are timber-built causeways laid across boggy ground; or simply alignments of stone or earthwork that follow routes too old to appear on any historical map. The Ballycally example sits within Clare, a county whose landscape holds considerable layers of early activity, from the limestone karst of the Burren to the dense scatter of ring-shaped enclosures that dot its interior parishes. Without more detail it is not possible to say which type this trackway represents, or how old it may be, but its formal recognition places it among features considered worth preserving and investigating.
