The exposed rock surface bears at least three cup and ring motifs, a type of prehistoric carving found across the British Isles and beyond. These mysterious symbols consist of circular depressions (cups) surrounded by concentric rings, with the cups measuring between 4 and 7 centimetres in diameter, whilst the enclosing rings span from 11 to 16 centimetres across.

The rock art sits amidst heather covered bogland, overlooking Lough Fad just 130 metres to the north. This isn’t an isolated example; another panel of rock art can be found 210 metres to the west, suggesting this area held particular significance for the people who created these enigmatic carvings thousands of years ago. The positioning on high ground with views across the landscape follows a pattern seen at many rock art sites throughout Ireland and Scotland.

Cup and ring marks remain one of archaeology’s enduring puzzles. Dating roughly from the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age (around 4000 to 1500 BCE), their exact purpose continues to elude researchers. Various theories have been proposed, from astronomical markers to territorial boundaries, ritual sites to simply artistic expression. Whatever their original meaning, these weathered carvings at Meendoran stand as lasting monuments to the creativity and symbolism of Ireland’s prehistoric inhabitants.
