Built from uncoursed field stones bound with lime and sand mortar, the structure measures 6.4 metres across its interior, with walls over two metres thick that taper slightly at the base. Though time has taken its toll on the upper levels, which now end abruptly where they once continued skyward, the tower remains an impressive example of medieval defensive architecture.

The tower’s design reveals the careful thought that went into its construction. Rather than having a ground floor entrance, which would have been vulnerable to attack, access was originally gained through a narrow mural staircase that winds through the thickness of the wall. This staircase, beginning at what is now a breach in the northeast wall (where a modern stile has been inserted), leads to a landing before descending to the windowless ground chamber. The only natural light at this level filters through a single splayed window on the south southwest side. Four sets of opposing joist holes, each measuring roughly 55 by 35 centimetres and extending 90 centimetres into the walls, mark where timber beams once supported a wooden floor between levels.

The first floor tells more of the tower’s domestic story, with window embrasures facing north and south providing both light and defensive positions. The remains of a fireplace and flue on the west northwest wall suggest this level served as living quarters, offering some comfort to its medieval inhabitants. A lintelled doorway on the eastern side connects to the mural stairs, creating the internal circulation that was essential to the tower’s defensive capabilities. The structure underwent repairs by the Office of Public Works in the 1940s, helping to preserve this National Monument for future generations to explore and understand.
