What visitors encounter today is a scene of considerable disarray; fallen masonry lies scattered across the site, creating a puzzle of stone that hints at the castle’s former structure. The ruins sit atop a distinctive circular, flat-topped mound that rises prominently from the terrain, a feature that archaeological surveys suggest may have originally served as a motte, one of the earliest forms of medieval fortification introduced to Ireland by the Anglo-Normans.

The castle’s elevated position wasn’t chosen by chance. From this vantage point, those who controlled Ballycahill could monitor movement across the surrounding countryside, making it an ideal defensive location. The circular mound beneath the ruins is particularly intriguing to historians, as it represents a transitional period in Irish castle building when earthwork fortifications were being replaced by, or incorporated into, stone structures.

Today, the site presents a fascinating glimpse into medieval Irish history, even if piecing together its exact layout requires considerable imagination. The confused jumble of fallen stones may frustrate those hoping for clearly defined walls and chambers, but it speaks eloquently to the passage of centuries and the inevitable decay that claims even the strongest fortifications. For those willing to make the climb, the extensive views alone justify the visit, offering the same strategic perspective that made this hilltop so valuable to its medieval builders.
