Site of Barons Inn, Dublin South City, Co. Dublin
The Friends of Medieval Dublin Map from 1978 places this inn immediately south of St. Bride’s Church, on the western side of the street that took its name from the same saint. Though the inn likely played host to countless visitors passing through one of Dublin’s busier thoroughfares during the medieval period, no physical traces remain visible today.
The location of Barons Inns speaks to the practical geography of medieval Dublin, where inns and taverns clustered near churches and along main streets. Bride Street itself was an important route connecting the medieval city with the surrounding countryside, making it a natural spot for travellers’ accommodation. The proximity to St. Bride’s Church would have offered both spiritual comfort and a useful landmark for weary travellers seeking lodging.
Archaeological surveys by Bradley and King in 1987 confirmed the site’s location through historical documentation, though the inn itself has long since vanished beneath centuries of urban development. Like many of Dublin’s medieval structures, Barons Inns exists now only in historical records and old maps, a ghost of the city’s past commercial life that once thrived along these ancient streets.
