The site appears on the 1837 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, clearly marked as both ‘Castle’ and ‘Bawn’, indicating this was once a fortified house with its defensive courtyard typical of plantation-era Ireland. Today, however, the monument has been completely levelled, leaving only scattered stones across the hillside from southwest through west to north as evidence of the substantial structures that once dominated this rural landscape.

The only potentially surviving feature is a curious rectangular depression measuring roughly 6.3 metres northeast to southwest and 2.2 metres northwest to southeast, sitting about 20 centimetres below the surrounding ground level. Located approximately six metres southeast of the hill’s summit, this sunken area has clearly defined northeast and northwest edges, whilst its southeast and southwest boundaries are barely traceable. Whether this depression represents the last remnant of the castle’s foundations, part of the bawn’s defensive walls, or simply a later quarry pit remains frustratingly unclear.

The complete destruction of Coolcor Castle serves as a sobering reminder of how many of Ireland’s lesser-known historical sites have vanished from the landscape, surviving only in old maps and the memories they left in placenames. What was once a symbol of power and control, overlooking the waters of Killeen Lough, has been reduced to little more than a scatter of stones and an ambiguous hollow in the ground, leaving historians and archaeologists to piece together its story from the faintest of clues.
