The exact location of medieval Kilsalebeg remains something of a mystery, though historians believe it was likely centred around the castle and mill at Pilltown in County Waterford.

The site sits on elevated, overgrown ground along the north bank of a stream that flows northeast to southwest, emerging onto mudflats about a kilometre and a half east of where the Blackwater River meets its estuary. Today, you won’t find any visible remains at ground level; nature has reclaimed what was once a significant fortification in this part of Ireland.

Historical records from 1640 paint a vivid picture of what once stood here, describing it as “an old battered castle with a large bawn” belonging to Sir Nicholas Walshe of Ballykeeroge. A bawn was a defensive wall that enclosed and protected a castle, typically featuring towers at the corners and serving as both a fortification and a space for keeping livestock safe from raiders. The fact that the castle was already described as “battered” nearly 400 years ago suggests it had seen better days even then, perhaps damaged during the various conflicts that swept through Ireland during the turbulent medieval and early modern periods.

Archaeological surveys conducted in the late 1980s by Bradley, Halpin and King confirmed that whilst the site holds historical significance, time and the elements have erased any above-ground traces of this once-important stronghold. The castle’s strategic position near the Blackwater estuary would have given its occupants control over river traffic and trade, making it a valuable asset for the Walshe family and their predecessors. Though the stones have long since disappeared, likely repurposed for other buildings in the area, the site remains catalogued in Ireland’s archaeological inventory as a testament to the layers of history hidden beneath the country’s landscape.
