Both the first and second editions of the six-inch OS maps, those meticulous records of Ireland’s landscape features, clearly mark this subterranean feature. Yet today, if you were to search these slopes, you’d find no trace of the cave; neither physical evidence nor local memory preserves any knowledge of it.

The site sits on a fairly steep incline in what is now productive agricultural land overlooking the river. Whether the cave collapsed naturally over time, was deliberately filled in for farming purposes, or was perhaps misidentified by the original surveyors remains a mystery. Such phantom features aren’t uncommon in Irish archaeology; landscape changes, agricultural improvements, and the passage of time have erased many sites that Victorian cartographers once deemed significant enough to record.

This vanished cave represents just one entry in the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. The survey catalogues field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, documenting both surviving monuments and those, like this cave, that exist only in historical records. It serves as a reminder that Ireland’s archaeological landscape is constantly evolving, with features regularly disappearing from both the physical world and collective memory.
