During sowing operations some time ago, farmers working near the crest of a hill in Figart, County Donegal, stumbled upon an intriguing piece of Ireland's hidden past: a souterrain, or underground passage, described at the time as a 'flag-covered tunnel'.

These subterranean structures, built primarily between the early medieval period and the 12th century, served multiple purposes for Ireland’s ancient communities; they provided cold storage for food, offered refuge during raids, and possibly held ritual significance for their builders.

The Figart souterrain sits within cultivated land that has likely been worked for centuries, its stone-lined passages remaining concealed beneath the soil until that chance discovery. Like many of the hundreds of souterrains found across Ireland, particularly in Ulster, this example was constructed using the dry-stone technique, with large flat stones, or flags, forming the roof. The positioning near a hilltop suggests it may have been associated with a ringfort or early settlement that once occupied this elevated ground, offering both defensive advantages and panoramic views across the Donegal landscape.

Today, this archaeological feature forms part of County Donegal’s rich tapestry of field monuments, documented in the comprehensive Archaeological Survey compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. While the exact age and full extent of the Figart souterrain remain subjects for further investigation, its discovery adds another piece to our understanding of how medieval Irish communities lived, stored their goods, and protected themselves in this corner of northwest Ireland.
