Standing stone, Crislaghmore, Co. Donegal

The Sites and Monuments Record for County Donegal, compiled in 1987, originally classified this location as a megalithic tomb, but field investigations have revealed something rather different. Instead of the expected prehistoric burial chamber, visitors will find a large granite stone leaning at an angle, most likely a standing stone from Ireland’s ancient past.

The monument consists of this solitary granite pillar with a small collection of stones gathered at its base. These stones, now covered in grass and moss, appear to be nothing more than the remnants of field clearance; stones removed by farmers over the centuries and piled here out of convenience rather than any ceremonial purpose. The misidentification in official records highlights how challenging it can be to accurately catalogue Ireland’s wealth of prehistoric monuments, particularly in remote areas where erosion, agriculture, and time have altered the landscape.

The site has been documented in several archaeological surveys over the years, including mentions by Colhoun in 1949 and later by Lord Killanin and Michael Duignan in their surveys of Irish antiquities during the 1960s. The confusion over its true nature persisted until Eamon Cody’s comprehensive Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland examined the site more thoroughly in 2002, finally setting the record straight. While it may not be the megalithic tomb once thought, this standing stone remains an intriguing reminder of County Donegal’s prehistoric inhabitants who marked their landscape with these enigmatic monuments thousands of years ago.
