Standing stone, Gortin North, Co. Donegal

In the pastoral landscape of Gortin North, County Donegal, there once stood an ancient standing stone that has now vanished from sight.

Marked on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey 6-inch map simply as 'Standing Stone' and later noted on the 3rd edition as 'Standing Stone (site of)', this prehistoric monument has left no visible traces on the ground. The site sits on good pasture land that slopes gently towards the south and west, offering expansive views across the surrounding countryside.

Standing stones like the one that once occupied this spot are amongst Ireland's most enigmatic prehistoric monuments, typically dating from the Bronze Age period between 2500 and 500 BCE. These solitary sentinels of stone served various purposes for ancient communities; some marked burial sites, others acted as territorial boundaries, and many likely held ritual or astronomical significance. The Gortin North stone would have been part of this broader tradition of megalithic monuments that dot the Irish landscape, silent witnesses to ceremonies and beliefs lost to time.

Though the physical stone has disappeared, its documented presence in historical maps ensures its place in the archaeological record of County Donegal. The information about this site comes from the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983, which catalogued field antiquities from the Mesolithic Period through to the 17th century. Even in its absence, the site remains significant as part of the county's rich prehistoric heritage, reminding us that not all ancient monuments survive the centuries intact, yet their memory persists through careful archaeological documentation.
