Standing stone, Gransha, Co. Donegal

In the rich pasture lands of Gransha, County Donegal, two ancient standing stones have silently witnessed millennia of Irish history.

The larger of the pair rises 2.77 metres from the ground, its base measuring 0.84 metres wide; a substantial monolith that would have required considerable effort to erect. Its companion stone, positioned to the northeast, stands at a more modest 1.05 metres high with a broader base of 1.1 metres wide. Together, they form part of a broader prehistoric landscape, with another standing stone located in the neighbouring field, suggesting this area held particular significance for the people who erected these monuments thousands of years ago.

These stones represent just a fraction of County Donegal’s remarkable archaeological heritage, which spans from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century. Standing stones like these were typically erected during the Bronze Age, roughly between 2500 and 500 BCE, though their exact purpose remains debated amongst archaeologists. Some may have served as territorial markers, others as commemorative monuments, whilst certain examples appear to have astronomical alignments marking important solar or lunar events.

The level pasture land surrounding the Gransha stones has likely been farmed for centuries, if not millennia, yet these prehistoric monuments have endured whilst the landscape around them has been continuously shaped and reshaped by human activity. Their survival into the modern era makes them valuable windows into Ireland’s deep past; tangible connections to the island’s earliest inhabitants who left few written records but whose stone monuments continue to intrigue visitors and researchers alike.
