Near the banks of the River Finn in County Donegal, a standing stone once marked its presence on the landscape, though you won't find any trace of it on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey maps.

This mysterious monument sat on good pasture land at Killygordon, just off the main road connecting Ballybofey to Lifford. The stone’s existence was documented in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, a comprehensive catalogue of the county’s field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983.

The area around Killygordon has long held archaeological interest, with three standing stones and a cist grave recorded in the vicinity. In 2005, when plans were drawn up for a new sewage treatment facility on the site of the existing one, archaeologists conducted a thorough investigation under excavation licence 05E0749. Christopher Read of North West Archaeological Services oversaw the dig, which involved nine test trenches; five measuring 20 metres long and four stretching to 50 metres, all approximately 1.8 metres wide and dug to depths of 40 to 50 centimetres.

Despite the area’s rich archaeological heritage, the excavation revealed no evidence of ancient activity at this particular location. The trenches showed similar contexts throughout, suggesting the immediate site had remained undisturbed by human occupation in antiquity. Whilst the standing stone itself may have vanished from maps and memory, its documentation serves as a reminder of the countless monuments that once dotted the Irish landscape, many now lost to time and agricultural development.
