In the pastoral fields of Killaghtee, County Donegal, two ancient standing stones have kept their silent vigil for millennia.

These weathered sentinels, known simply as Stone A and Stone B in archaeological records, stand as enduring monuments to Ireland’s prehistoric past. Stone A rises 2.3 metres from the earth, its roughly 60-centimetre width aligned along an east-northeast to west-southwest axis, whilst its companion, Stone B, measures 1.86 metres in height but presents a much slimmer profile at just 17 centimetres wide, oriented from east-southeast to west-northwest.

The slight variation in their orientations suggests these stones weren’t simply placed at random but were deliberately positioned, perhaps aligned with celestial events or serving as territorial markers for ancient communities. Their location in what remains fairly good pasture land today hints at the continuity of agricultural use in this area, where farmers have worked around these prehistoric monuments for generations. The stones were formally catalogued during the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, conducted in 1983 by Brian Lacey and his team of archaeologists, who systematically documented the county’s field antiquities from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century.

Standing stone pairs like those at Killaghtee are relatively uncommon in the Irish archaeological landscape, making them particularly intriguing to researchers. Whilst their original purpose remains uncertain; theories range from astronomical observatories to ritual sites or boundary markers; they continue to serve as tangible links to the beliefs and practices of Ireland’s Bronze Age inhabitants, who erected these monuments between 2500 and 500 BCE.
