On the southern slope of Slieve Dart in north County Galway, there is a place that exists more vividly on an old map than it does on the ground.

The third edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, published in 1930, records a cluster of circular and rectilinear structures here, labelled collectively as "Clacan", a term suggesting a possible grouping of rural dwellings. Two features within that cluster are named individually: one, at the western edge, is called "Sweating Kiln"; the other, 170 metres to the east at the head of a stream, is marked "Sweating Kilns (in Ruins)". A sweating kiln, in the Irish rural context, was typically a small stone structure used to dry or cure grain or turf, though the term occasionally appears in connection with other traditional processes. Whatever their precise function, both structures were already partially or wholly decayed by the time the mapmakers recorded them.

The paper trail grows thinner from there. A researcher named Neary, writing in 1914, mentioned sweating kilns "on the north side of the mountain road at Quinultagh", and it is possible he was referring to the same features, though his location map places them roughly 2.2 kilometres to the west-northwest of where the OS map situates them. That discrepancy was never resolved. Land clearance in the area has since removed whatever surface traces remained, and nothing is now visible at the site. The broader settlement cluster, the "Clacan", has similarly vanished. What the map preserves is a snapshot of a small upland community, probably long abandoned before 1930, whose kilns were already ruins when someone thought to write their name down.
