Standing in the gently rolling pastures of County Galway, the ruins of a 13th-century castle at Kilskeagh offer a glimpse into medieval Irish fortification.

What remains today is a modest rectangular keep, measuring over 8.7 metres in length and 7.6 metres in width, with its north gable wall still intact alongside substantial portions of the east and west walls. Though time has taken its toll, the two-storey structure retains enough architectural details to reveal how its inhabitants once lived within these stone walls.

The castle’s defensive features and domestic arrangements are still visible in the surviving masonry. While the original entrance has been lost, a horizontal socket in the deteriorating southern end of the east wall likely marks where a drawbar once secured the ground floor doorway. Inside, horizontal ledges halfway up the walls show where wooden floors once divided the ground and first storeys. The windows are simple rectangular slits, typical of defensive architecture, with the first-floor opening in the north wall set within a small embrasure for added protection. Two small aumbries, or wall cupboards, can be found in both the east and west walls at ground level, providing storage space for the castle’s occupants.

Historical records suggest the castle remained occupied well into the 16th century; in 1574, it was noted as belonging to one Murrogh McSwyne. The first-floor doorway at the northern end of the west wall led to a projecting latrine, its broken stonework still visible on the exterior; a practical reminder that even medieval fortifications required basic amenities. Located 755 metres north-northwest of the castle ruins stands a medieval church, suggesting this was once a small but significant settlement in north Galway’s landscape.
