Ringfort (Rath), Behybaun, Co. Mayo

In the pasture at Behybaun, a circle of blackthorn, hawthorn and brambles marks the outline of a settlement that has been quietly dissolving into the Mayo landscape for well over a thousand years.

The vegetation is so dense that it has, at points, made the site difficult to inspect properly, which is itself a kind of accidental preservation: the scrub discourages interference as effectively as any fence.

The site is a rath, the Irish term for an earthen ringfort, a category of enclosed farmstead built predominantly between the sixth and tenth centuries and once numbering in the tens of thousands across Ireland. This particular example sits at the southern end of a north-to-south ridge, and its position was clearly chosen with some care. A slight rise in the ground to the north limits visibility in that direction, but the land opens out to the east, south, and west, giving whoever farmed here a reasonable watch over the surrounding terrain. The enclosure is roughly oval or circular, estimated at between twenty-five and thirty metres in diameter. An earthen bank running from the north-north-west around to the north-east survives in reasonable condition, measuring around four metres wide and standing up to one and a half metres high on the exterior at the north end. Elsewhere the bank has been worn down to a low scarp, barely half a metre high at the south. A few stones still protrude from the inner face of the bank, and a wider section of scarp at the south-east may preserve the line of the original entrance. Large boulders piled against the outer face to the north are almost certainly the result of later field clearance, farmers pushing stones out of the way and using the old bank as a convenient dump. Part of the eastern bank has been absorbed into a modern field boundary, which is a common fate for these structures.
