On the 16th of January, 1923, a gunfight erupted at Market Square, with shots allegedly fired near Hegarty’s Hotel. The Treaty had ended British rule in 26 counties, marking the creation of the Irish Free State. However, it also ignited a civil war, as opinions on the Treaty split the Sinn Féin party and the nation.
