Barrow, Ballyarr, Co. Donegal

In the countryside near Ballyarr, County Donegal, a modest rise in the landscape marks what remains of an ancient burial site.

This circular mound, measuring roughly 22 metres across and standing about a metre high, is all that survives of a barrow that was levelled back in 1854. Historical records from that time, notably from Kinahan's work published in 1889, tell us that when the barrow was disturbed, it yielded an urn and a kistvaen; a small stone burial chamber typically used in prehistoric Ireland.

Today, visitors to the site will find a flat-topped earthwork that barely hints at its former significance. The most tangible link to its past sits right on top: a substantial stone slab measuring 1.51 by 1.05 metres, believed to be part of the original kistvaen structure. This lone survivor offers a physical connection to the people who constructed this burial monument, likely during the Bronze Age when such barrows were commonly built across Ireland.

The site forms part of County Donegal's rich archaeological landscape, documented extensively in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, which catalogues field antiquities from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century. Whilst the barrow at Ballyarr may lack the grandeur of better-preserved monuments, it serves as a quiet reminder of how much archaeological material has been lost to agricultural improvement and development over the centuries, making the surviving evidence all the more precious.
