Historical records show the castle was already standing by 1574, when it served as home to one Dermot Omanyn, likely a member of the O’Nolan family who held sway in this part of County Galway during the Tudor period.

Today, visitors to the site will find little more than a rectangular foundation mound measuring roughly 10 metres long by 7 metres wide, with substantial chunks of masonry scattered about; testament to what was once a fortified dwelling. The castle’s walls have long since collapsed, leaving no architectural details visible to hint at doorways, windows, or internal layouts that might have existed. A series of earthen banks still encircle the monument, possibly the remains of defensive earthworks or boundaries that once protected the castle and its inhabitants.

These scant remains offer a tangible connection to 16th century Galway, when Gaelic lords still maintained their traditional strongholds despite increasing English influence in Ireland. The site was documented in the Archaeological Inventory of County Galway, compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling in 1999, ensuring this modest but historically significant ruin remains part of the archaeological record.
