On the southern face of a low grassy hummock near Grange in County Galway, a feature that once looked intriguing on paper turned out to be something altogether more prosaic when someone finally went to look.
The 1944 to 1945 revision of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map showed a hachured marking at this spot, the kind of hatching cartographers use to indicate a raised or irregular landform, which gave the site an air of potential significance. It was not until 1984 that an inspection on the ground revealed the feature to be a large sand quarry, almost certainly worked at some point after 1700.
