Earthwork, Ballydonohoe, Co. Clare

In the townland of Ballydonohoe in County Clare, an earthwork sits in the landscape, recorded but largely unexplained.

Earthworks of this kind are among the most ambiguous features in Irish archaeology: the term covers a broad range of raised or hollowed ground forms, from the banks and ditches of early medieval enclosures to the levelled platforms of long-vanished structures, and without excavation or detailed survey it is often impossible to say with any certainty what a given example once was or who made it. That ambiguity is part of what makes them quietly compelling.
