Megalithic tomb – wedge tomb, Na Doirí, Co. Cork

On a level spur of cut-away bog in Na Doirí, County Cork, the remains of a prehistoric wedge tomb sit quietly above the Douglas River valley, reduced by millennia and the encroachment of peat to a scatter of stones that requires some concentration to read as a monument at all.

That it survives in any recognisable form is itself a small surprise.

Wedge tombs are the most numerous of Ireland's megalithic tomb types, built roughly between 2500 and 2000 BC, and they take their name from the characteristic floor plan that widens and rises toward the entrance end. This example at Na Doirí follows that general alignment, running east-north-east to west-south-west, though what remains is fragmentary. The gallery measures 2.3 metres in length and around 0.9 metres in width at the eastern end. Two jamb-like stones mark the western end, with single sidestones to the north and south and a doubled backstone at the east. Outer-wall stones survive on the north, east, and southern sides. An upright slab to the north-west adds an ambiguity that the archaeology has not fully resolved: it may be a remnant of the tomb's original facade, or it may belong to a pre-bog wall that appears to skirt the northern side of the monument. The distinction matters because it touches on how the structure was originally enclosed and approached, and on what other activity may have taken place in this landscape before the bog took over. The site was documented by Seán Ó Nualláin in 1989, whose survey of Irish wedge tombs remains the foundational reference for monuments of this type.
