Utility Structures
In the townland of Gallagh in County Mayo, a structure has been recorded and catalogued, assigned a monument number, and filed away, yet the details of what it actually is remain largely out of public reach.
The simple designation "building" covers an enormous range of possibilities in the Irish archaeological record, from the ruins of a post-medieval farmhouse to the remains of a landlord's outbuilding, a mill, a chapel, or something far older repurposed through the centuries. That ambiguity is, in its own way, a reasonable summary of how much of rural Mayo's built heritage exists: noted, but not yet fully told.
