No wall, no gable, no foundation course breaks the surface. The site appears on William Larkin's county map of around 1802, labelled "Ch. Ru.", suggesting it was recognised as a ruin even then, yet it was omitted from every edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps that followed, as though the cartographers decided there was simply nothing left worth marking.

The church was reputedly one of the monastic foundations of St Columcille, the sixth-century Irish monk whose missionary activity left a scatter of dedications and attributed sites across the western seaboard and beyond. Whether or not the connection is historical rather than devotional, the surrounding landscape carries his name in several forms. A natural boulder on the shore to the southwest is known as Mullán Cholmcille, or St Columcille's Boat, a name that suggests the rock's shape caught the imagination of people who already had the saint in mind when they looked at the shoreline. Two tidal holy wells lie close by to the south and southwest, wells that are submerged and revealed by the tide, a type of site found occasionally along the Irish coast where the sacred and the intertidal quietly overlap. The cluster of a vanished church, a named boulder, and two tidal wells around a single small headland gives the place an unusual density of early medieval association, even if the physical evidence has largely been reclaimed by grass and salt air.
