Church (in ruins), Garryrickin, Co. Kilkenny

On a south-west to north-east ridge in Garryrickin, Co. Kilkenny, there is a milking parlour and a cluster of cow sheds.

Beneath or behind them, depending on how generously you read the landscape, lies what was once a medieval chapel. By 1973, all that remained of the original structure was a single ivy-covered wall, and that too was demolished to make way for the farm buildings. The site now holds almost nothing that would suggest a church ever stood there, which makes its documentary afterlife all the more striking.

The historian William Carrigan, writing in 1905, recorded the building in its already ruined state. Even then, the door and windows were gone, and most of the foundations had been cleared away, leaving measurements impossible to take. What survived was a single south wall, roughly a metre thick and still standing about three metres high, which Carrigan described as strongly built and evidently very old. He connected the site to a place called Cooliaghnoo, sometimes written as Cooliagh New, a name used to distinguish it from the nearby church of Coolaghmore. The distinction mattered because both sites sat within the same general area and could easily be confused. Carrigan traced the chapel back to the Red Book of Ossory, a significant ecclesiastical register associated with the diocese of Ossory, where an entry dating to around 1500 records it as the "Capella de Colat," within the parish of Kyllamery. That entry is now among the only real evidence that the building existed at all.

There is little for a visitor to find here. The archaeology has been built over, the walls are gone, and the ridge in Garryrickin gives no obvious outward sign of what once occupied this particular patch of farmland. What remains is a name in a medieval register, a description by a careful local historian, and a quiet example of how completely a very old place can be erased in a single year.
