Earthwork, Tintrim, Co. Clare

In the townland of Tintrim in County Clare, an earthwork sits in the landscape, recorded and mapped but not yet fully explained.

Earthworks of this kind, broad categories that can encompass anything from ancient field boundaries and enclosures to the remains of ringforts or burial mounds, are among the most common and most quietly overlooked features of the Irish countryside. They tend not to announce themselves. A raised bank, a subtle depression, a slight change in how the grass grows over a wet winter; these are often all that remains of structures that may be centuries or millennia old.
