Ecclesiastical enclosure, Clooney, Co. Clare

Something large may be hiding in plain sight near the Ennistimon to Corrofin road in County Clare, though you would never know it from standing in the field.

On the 1916 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, a short curving arc of hachures, the cartographic shorthand for an earthwork or raised feature, was recorded in a field directly across the road from a medieval church and its graveyard. By May 1999, when the site was inspected on the ground, the feature had vanished entirely; the field had been levelled and drained, leaving no visible surface trace.

The story did not end there. Aerial imagery from the early 2010s revealed a curving depression running roughly 30 metres south of the road and crossing two separate fields. A second curving line appears to the north of the graveyard, and if the two are read together as parts of the same feature, the resulting enclosure would measure approximately 120 metres east to west and around 90 metres north to south. Those dimensions are characteristic of an ecclesiastical enclosure, the kind of roughly circular or oval boundary that would have defined an early Irish monastic or church site, setting sacred ground apart from the surrounding landscape. The interpretation is not certain; the depression could equally represent the ghost of an old boreen, a narrow rural laneway worn into the soil over centuries. What tilts the balance toward the ecclesiastical reading is the wider cluster of features at Clooney: a medieval church, its graveyard, and a holy well lying approximately 127 metres to the west. Holy wells in Ireland were frequently incorporated into early Christian sacred landscapes, and their presence alongside a possible enclosure of this scale strengthens the case for a site of some ecclesiastical significance once occupying this rise in the hilly, marshy pasture of east Clare.
