Enclosure, Ballinderry, Co. Galway

In the grassland of the former Ballinderry Demesne in County Galway, a circular enclosure roughly 35 metres across has been erased so completely from the surface of the earth that there is nothing left to see.

No earthwork, no ridge, no depression, no scatter of stone. The only evidence that anything was ever there comes from the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps, which recorded its outline at some point before the ground swallowed it entirely.

Circular enclosures of this kind are among the most common archaeological features in the Irish landscape, typically interpreted as the remains of ringforts, the enclosed farmsteads that served as the basic unit of rural settlement throughout the early medieval period. They survive in their thousands across the country, yet they also disappear at a quiet but steady rate, lost to ploughing, drainage, and development. The Ballinderry example sits on a gently south-facing slope, the sort of aspect that early farmers favoured for the combination of shelter, drainage, and light it offered. That the site fell within demesne land, the managed estate grounds of a later landlord period, may well account for its destruction, since demesne improvement works from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries obliterated a great many earlier features across Ireland.

What makes this particular site worth pausing over is precisely its absence. The OS six-inch mapping, carried out in Ireland from the 1830s onwards, captured the landscape at a moment before much of that destruction had run its course, preserving on paper what the ground no longer holds. The Ballinderry enclosure exists now only as a cartographic ghost, a circle on an old map with nothing beneath it to confirm what it once was.
