Enclosure, Drumanure, Co. Clare

In the townland of Drumanure, in County Clare, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded and mapped but largely unnarrated.

Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet least understood monument types in Ireland, a broad category that takes in everything from the earthen banks of a ringfort, which would have enclosed a farmstead in the early medieval period, to prehistoric ceremonial boundaries and later pastoral features. Without knowing which applies here, the site occupies a curious position: officially acknowledged, formally classified, but quietly waiting for its story to be told.
