Fulacht fia, Clashmaguire, Co. Cork

There is nothing to see at Clashmaguire.

The field looks like any other patch of Cork pasture, and that is precisely the point. Somewhere beneath the topsoil and grass lies what was once a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in enormous numbers across Ireland, typically identified by a characteristic horseshoe-shaped mound of fire-cracked stone and charred material left behind after repeated use. At Clashmaguire, even that mound is gone.

Around 1980, during land reclamation works, the burnt mound was levelled. The material was cleared away and the ground covered with topsoil, erasing the last visible evidence of a site that had probably survived, largely undisturbed, for several thousand years. Fulachtaí fia are most commonly dated to the Bronze Age, roughly 1500 to 500 BC, and they are thought to have functioned as outdoor cooking places where water was boiled by dropping fire-heated stones into a trough. The stones, once cracked by repeated heating and cooling, were discarded into a heap nearby. That heap, sometimes standing a metre or more high and spanning several metres across, is usually what alerts archaeologists or local people to a site in the first place. At Clashmaguire, the heap is gone, the trough is buried, and the surface gives no indication that anything lies beneath.

What makes the site worth noting is less what remains than what its disappearance represents. Land reclamation in the late twentieth century affected archaeological sites across Ireland, often before any formal recording or excavation could take place. The survival of a fulacht fia name in the record at all is largely a matter of local memory, somebody knowing that the mound had been there and what it was before the machines arrived.
